About

JD has spent 25 years in wireless: designing networks, chasing interference, and translating 802.11 spec language into things real engineers can act on. He holds the Certified Wireless Network Expert (CWNE #366) and Certified Wireless IoT Solutions Expert (CWISE #5) certifications, and is a co-founder of The Wi-Fi Awards.

Since 2013, JD has been a Tech Field Day delegate, with more than 23 events spanning Mobility Field Day, Networking Field Day, and exclusive sessions at Cisco Live, Aruba Atmosphere, and RSA Conference. He shows up to ask the questions working engineers need answered, not the ones vendors want to field.

This site came from a specific problem: most Wi-Fi security documentation describes what happens, not exactly how. The Frame Exchange Reference fixes that. His blog, JD Talks Technology, covers Wi-Fi, IoT, security, and networking with the same approach: grounded analysis, honest takes on vendor claims, and a long view on how the technology actually matures.

Away from the keyboard, JD is an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot, a licensed Ham Radio operator, and a North Carolina Certified Beekeeper. He 3D prints his own tooling when off-the-shelf options let him down, which is more often than it should be. Same curiosity, different frequency bands.
