Association
and Roaming

frames.bitbucketlabs.com · IEEE 802.11-2024

An interactive, frame-by-frame reference for Wi-Fi security protocol exchanges. Each exchange shows the complete message sequence between STA, AP, RADIUS, Directory, and DHCP — from initial Beacon through authenticated data flow — with frame fields, key derivations, expert notes, and standards references at every step.

Based on IEEE 802.11-2024, IEEE 802.1X, Wi-Fi Alliance WPA3 Specification v3.5, and supporting RFCs.

How to Use
  • Choose Association or Roaming from the Mode selector in the header
  • Select a protocol from the Protocol dropdown — options filter by the active mode
  • For Roaming, choose a roaming type: FT — Fast Transition (802.11r) or OKC — Opportunistic Key Caching
  • Click any message row in the timeline to expand frame fields, key material, and expert notes
  • Click an arrow in the sequence diagram to highlight that message and scroll the timeline to it
  • Drag the handle below the node header to resize the arrow pane height
  • Use Collapse All / Expand All to switch between summary and full-detail views
